NATO foreign ministers met this afternoon in the Belgian capital, Brussels, to hear demands from Ukraine for more equipment before agreeing to arm Kyiv to the teeth with much more modern weapons. NATO allies have agreed to supply “new and heavier” weapons to Ukraine as Kyiv warns that it needs immediate reinforcements in its fight against Russia or it will be “too late”. British Foreign Secretary Liz Truss said after a meeting with allied counterparts in Brussels that an agreement had been reached to help Ukrainian defenders upgrade “Soviet-era equipment to standard NATO equipment on a bilateral basis”. After the NATO summit, Ms Truss said: “We have agreed to strengthen our support for Ukraine and we have also acknowledged that the conflict has entered a new and different phase with a more focused Russian attack.” “There has been support for countries to supply new and heavier equipment to Ukraine so that they can respond to these new threats from Russia. “We recognize that the conflict has entered a new and different phase; Putin has changed his tactics, but not his intentions.” Liz Truss “And we agreed to help Ukrainian forces move from Soviet-era equipment to standard NATO equipment on a bilateral basis. “He wants control of the whole of Ukraine,” he said. “And our goal as the United Kingdom remains clear: Putin must lose to Ukraine.” Meanwhile, Ms Truss described Russia as a “global outcast” following the United Nations vote to suspend Vladimir Putin’s country’s participation in the UN Human Rights Council. The United Nations General Assembly voted 93 to 24 in favor of suspending Russia’s membership in the human rights body, with 58 abstentions. Women outside their homes, northwest of Kiev
Cautious optimism
Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmitry Kuleba, speaking after the talks, said he was moderately optimistic about the level of Western military support for his country, but urged that weapons be handed over quickly. Mr Kuleba warned: “Either you are helping us now, and I’m talking about days, not weeks, or your help will come too late.” He declined to say which countries would supply the equipment or what it would be. NATO allies fear Russia’s decision to withdraw from areas around Kyiv will allow Russian President Vladimir Putin to focus his attack on eastern Ukraine.
From vehicles to anti-tank missiles
Ukrainian generals visited the United Kingdom to see some of the kits that could possibly be offered, including armored vehicles that could provide protection to troops from Russian attack as they move into the war zone. The Czech Republic has reportedly sent Soviet-era tanks and personnel carriers to Ukraine, and the Times has suggested that the United Kingdom also plans to supply armored vehicles to help resist Russian forces. Prime Minister Boris Johnson had said earlier on Thursday that Britain was trying to offer more military aid, a move backed by Labor leader Sir Keir Starmer. The United Kingdom is already supplying equipment, including anti-tank and anti-aircraft missiles, to the Ukrainian Armed Forces. read more
EU plans to freeze Russian energy revenues as conflict escalates in Ukraine
According to the Times, options being considered by the Department of Defense (MoD) for further support of this support include sending Mastiff or Jackal patrol vehicles to the battlefield. The latest assessment of information by the Ministry of Defense confirmed that Russia is now focusing on operations in the Donbas region in eastern Ukraine. Russian artillery and air raids continue in the area, with officials suggesting that attacks on infrastructure targets are designed to make it difficult for Ukrainian troops to refuel. But despite being rebuilt after a failed attack in the capital, Russian forces “are likely to continue to face morale and supply and personnel shortages,” the foreign ministry said. As for the sanctions, the foreign minister said she hoped to see “more countries” commit to banning Russian energy imports, as Kyiv pressured European leaders to go further in punishing Moscow. Mr Kuleba said: “As long as the West continues to buy Russian gas and oil, it supports Ukraine with one hand and the Russian war machine with the other. “How many Buchas must be made to impose sanctions?” he said, referring to images of Ukrainian civilians apparently killed by the retreat of Russian forces on the outskirts of Kiev. read more
