The Boom X Boxing coach and director’s passion for this venture began the moment the pandemic hit. “I was about to work with a gym and then COVID hit,” Roseman said. “I was determined to move forward, so I built a home facility that included an outdoor training area. I would also go to a student’s home if that was their wish. I knew the importance of this program and I wanted to make sure to get it up and running.” Through these training opportunities as well as online group or individual sessions, word began to spread about the benefits of boxing training. The foundation of the program is built around the multiplicity of movements that boxing requires. Roseman applies these in a fun and restorative context for the benefit of his students. “I think it’s the best for brain function and physical function,” he said. “There’s a lot of movement and a lot of combinations that the brain has to think about. It’s not one-sided, it’s both ways. I’ve seen huge improvements in the people I’ve worked with and I love it.” Coach Roseman has completed numerous courses in the US and Canada focusing on neurological disorders such as Parkinson’s and Multiple Sclerosis. As a senior himself, he works with new technologies, such as augmented reality, that make workouts more engaging, fun and successful. Anne McIsaac was diagnosed with Parkinson’s in 2014 and began training to box like a world champion. “It’s very encouraging,” Anne McIsaac said. “With Parkinson’s you don’t have dopamine, you lack motivation. When you bite it inspires you, gives you energy and gives you coordination.” Stephanie Stavrow was diagnosed in early 2013 with multiple sclerosis. It took her nearly a year to recover from the initial attack by focusing on compound exercises. Her commitment to health led her to earn several YMCA certifications and become a personal trainer. Now her training with Roseman has reaped benefits. “Through the movement of the legs I knew my weight shift was off,” I didn’t know because of neuropathy in my right leg, but now it’s improved. There is less tingling in my hands, I move without worry. I even do a 10- to 12-minute run when before I finish after two minutes.” To learn more about the program, go to Boom X Boxing on Facebook.
