Mr Sunak said: “My life wouldn’t be any easier if I sat here and [said] “I’m going to do this wonderful sounding thing and this wonderful thing”? But that would not be leadership. “I think it would damage trust, because part of rebuilding trust is for government and politicians to deliver what they say. And to sit here and promise you a bunch of things that I don’t think are right or deliverable would be wrong.” Earlier in the day, Mrs Truss had argued otherwise, saying her tax cuts would not fuel inflation and were necessary to avoid recession. He said: “What is unaffordable is to raise taxes, stifle growth and end up much worse off. Many international bodies, including the OECD, say that our current policy is contractionary, likely to lead to a recession.” Speaking about Mr Sunak’s electability he added: “I think the problem is that if we continue with our current economic policy, which is predicted to lead to a recession, it will be very difficult for the Conservatives to win an election.”
