His infamous bicycle boss, Toby Mitchell, thought he was the victim of an April Fool’s prank when he was shot by his own infamous Mongol gang – until he was ordered to remove the club’s tattoos. In a move that surprised the Victorian criminal underworld, Mitchell – who is Victoria’s top bicycle – was invited to a meeting on April 1 at the Port Melbourne club. But he did not laugh when he realized that his gang had been seized by a spectacular coup – and that he had been expelled. The next morning – according to strict cycling tradition – the gang’s tattoos were removed at the City of Ink parlor in South Melbourne. Why Mitchell was expelled by the Mongols remains unknown, with some pointing to his links to a specific Melbourne criminal identity as well as his high profile. Mitchell has more than 300,000 followers on Instagram and regularly updates his social media account with photos of workouts at the gym, luxury cars and meetings with celebrities, including retired boxer Anthony Mundine and AFL legend Sam Newman. Earlier this month, Mitchell complained to a court judge that his life as an outlaw is sometimes so difficult that police are pressuring him to “get the jig” out. Mitchell was jailed last December for two months after he got involved in a fight in Echuca, North Victoria, for which he was accused of PTSD. It was also recently reported that the 47-year-old is “tired” of the lifestyle with the bike after years of public quarrels, arrests and tenures behind bars. Also a former member of the Bandidos, Mitchell’s next move will interest many. According to the Herald Sun, Nick ‘The Knife’ Forbes is the new national president of the Mongols, with Phillip Main his sergeant after the coup. The new leadership comes as several Victoria-based Mongols have been brutally murdered in recent years. In 2019, Rocco Curra was lucky enough to survive a shooting and a few months later the fruitful Paul Virgona was shot. The Mongols Josh Rider and Aaron Ong were later charged with Virgona’s murder and in 2020, another Mongol member, Shane Bowden, was executed on the Gold Coast. The dreaded gang has also recruited a number of members who were once linked to the Bandidos, most notably National President Jason Addison.
