A gunman wearing a gas mask and an orange construction vest is on his way to Brooklyn after shooting at least 13 people on a crowded subway platform in Sunset Park during rush hour on Tuesday.
At least five people are believed to have been injured, four are said to have been shot or hit by shrapnel and another was shot on the R train at 36th Street Station in Sunset Park.
At about the same time, there were reports of an explosion nearby. It is not clear where the gunman is now, but NYPD units are pursuing him.
A NYPD spokesman could only confirm that a shooting had taken place and that no one was in custody.
Many non-explosive devices have been found at the site that FDNY is now working to remove safely.
“Initially, the call came as smoke in the subway station. Upon arrival, police found several people shot and did not fire devices.

The NYPD said it was still searching for the man after the R train massacre at 36th Street Station in Sunset Park at around 8.30am.

“Thirteen people are injured. “This remains an active scene,” said an FDNY spokesman.
The shocking video shows bloodied victims scattered on the ground at the metro station as the smoke came out of the train.
A man was seen lying motionless on the floor with his hands over his face and his legs raised after the horrific attack.
Others had lost their shoes and torn their clothes as the New York subway speaker system sent messages to passengers.
Passengers shouted to board a different train for safety, while the injured were being treated by emergency services.
