The new eligibility announced Monday includes high-risk individuals who are immunosuppressed and may have a higher risk of serious side effects after being infected with COVID-19.
The following groups are now eligible for PCR testing and evaluation for antiviral therapies such as Paxlovid:
People aged 18 and over who are immunosuppressed
People aged 70 and over
People 60 years of age and older with less than three doses of the vaccine
People 18 years of age and older with less than three vaccine doses and at least one risk condition, such as a chronic medical condition.
The province also allows select pharmacies to dispense prescription Paxlovid treatments starting later this week. The full list of participating pharmacies will be available at 8 a.m. Wednesday.
The county said antiviral treatment should be started within five days of symptoms in most cases.
Therefore, people who belong to a higher risk group and who have symptoms common to the new coronavirus should seek immediate examination and care through their healthcare provider or clinical evaluation center.
Patients can also use a positive rapid antigen test to be tested for antiviral therapy, officials said.
The county says it expects a regular supply of Paxlovid, one of Pfizer-made oral antivirals approved by Health Canada earlier this year, throughout 2022.
