Listen to the article (2 minutes) WASHINGTON — The House has passed a bill that would provide same-sex and interracial marriage protections under federal law, with Democratic lawmakers saying the Supreme Court’s recent decision to end abortion rights could jeopardize other precedents . The 267-157 vote on the Respect for Marriage Act comes the same week the House will also vote on the Contraceptive Right Act. Both pieces of legislation would enshrine in law rights not enumerated in the Constitution, but which the court has recognized in recent decades. Senate Democrats have not said whether they will schedule votes on the House bills.
