The Pentagon is seeking to transfer more sophisticated equipment to Ukraine, with a package likely to include armored Humvees, coastal defense drones and shell cannons, U.S. officials told the Washington Post. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has called for more advanced weapons for his country’s fight against Russia, and this new aid package could reach $ 750 million, US officials have said. They warned that the exact amount and items were still being considered and that some of the weapons would be new to Ukrainian troops and would likely need to be trained on how to use them. The United States has provided more than $ 2.4 billion in security assistance to Ukraine since taking office, up from $ 1.7 billion after Russia invaded the country on February 24, the Post reported. Pentagon spokesman John Kirby told reporters that Ukrainian Defense Minister Oleksiy Reznikov spoke with US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin on Tuesday and discussed weapons. Reznikov wrote on Twitter that Ukraine would like more artillery, armored vehicles, fighter jets, anti-ship missiles, air defense systems and unmanned aerial vehicles. A senior US defense official told the Post that the United States sends eight to 10 military aid flights to neighboring countries each day, with the items then being flown to Ukraine. Only there, Ukrainian officials decide how the equipment will be distributed, the official said. Read more in the Washington Post.
