A Hughes 369D helicopter carrying logging operations crashed north of Sayward along Johnstone Strait around 9 a.m. Wednesday, killing the pilot. According to a BC RCMP press release issued late Wednesday afternoon, the pilot, who was the sole occupant of the helicopter, was found dead by search and rescue members with a 442 Comox. The Canadian Transportation Safety Board (TSB), which is responsible for investigating air accidents, has deployed a team of investigators to the crash site. The BC RCMP and BC Coroners Service are also working with TSB investigators to determine the cause of the crash. The BC RCMP also asks anyone with incident information to contact Sayward at 250-282-5522. Editor’s note: An earlier version of this story reported that the helicopter involved was a Cormorant.
