The Boeing aircraft allegedly had problems with the hydraulic landing system that pushed the pilot to make the forced landing. Footage shows the DHL plane gliding on the asphalt and emitting thick white smoke. The plane then turns sharply on the runway, before slipping off the asphalt and breaking in two. In a statement, DHL said: “The incident team has been activated and an investigation will be carried out with the competent authorities to determine what happened.” There were only two crew members on board the Boeing at the time of the crash and both are said to be unharmed. Juan Santamaria Airport closed between 10.30 and 15.30 that day following the incident, disrupting approximately 57 commercial and cargo flights and 8,500 passengers.
