A man was arrested and a firearm was found with the help of police dog Jango. The Kelowna RCMP tried to stop the traffic on April 8 at 4:43 pm, but the suspect fled on foot. Police chased him and arrested the suspect a few blocks away. Evidence suggests the suspect, who was known to be carrying a firearm, may have dropped a firearm nearby. The Jango police dog was developed and a search of 1100-block on Sutherland Avenue led to the discovery of a loaded 9mm pistol in the backyard of a property. Police later learned that the property where the gun was recovered is frequented by young children and near a shopping mall, a busy location for families. The 39-year-old suspect will appear in court on May 5, 2022 where he may face several charges under the Penal Code, which could include:

1 possession of a firearm 1 firearm possession number knowing that its possession is not authorized 1 category of unauthorized possession of a weapon 1 category of possession of a loaded prohibited or restricted firearm 1 category of possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose 1 peace officer obstruction count

“The well-trained police dog, Jango, played a key role in removing a weapon from the streets of Kelowna and possibly preventing an innocent child from finding it,” Const said. Mike Della-Paolera.
