The first occurred on April 9 in Scarborough near a square in the area of Eglinton Avenue East and Markham Road.
At the time, Police Chief James Ramer said a 28-year-old man was standing on a nearby sidewalk when he bent down to put some bags on the ground.
“While he was standing, the accused man, who we believe was a complete stranger, hit him with an ax in the back of the head, causing serious injuries,” Ramer said.
The victim was rushed to hospital with life-threatening injuries. His condition has since improved to stable.
After the attack, police said the suspect fled on foot. He was found in a mansion complex in the area of Kingston and Scarborough Golf streets shortly afterwards, based on information received by the police from the public.
Tristin Theriault, 31, without pre-determined address, was arrested in connection with the incident and charged with attempted murder, carrying a hidden weapon and dangerous weapons. He will appear in a Toronto courtroom on Wednesday.
The second attack took place on April 11 when a 27-year-old woman got off the subway at Yorkdale Station, according to police.
Police said the woman noticed a man she did not know walking towards her.
“The man fell on her and when she turned, the man pulled out a knife,” Ramer said. “Frightened, the victim tried to flee, but the accused caught her, hit her on the ground and stabbed her and cut her with a knife.”
Ramer said a TTC employee intervened and held the suspect with the help of two members of the public until police arrived.
The woman was injured in the upper chest and neck and was rushed to hospital for emergency treatment, police said.
The accused in this case has been identified as Yasser Mohamed Aly, 37, without a fixed address. He appeared in a Toronto courtroom Monday.
Given the accidental nature of the attacks, Ramer said there was no information suggesting that there was any threat to public safety or that the incidents were related.
Investigations into all four incidents are ongoing and police are asking anyone with information to contact them at 416-808-7400 or Crime Stoppers.
