Police will gather “significant information and evidence” from those Ukrainians entering Canada who wish to provide it, in the hope of using the information in future criminal investigations, according to a statement from Canadian War Crimes Partners.
The War Crimes Program is a collaboration between the Department of Justice, the RCMP, the Canadian Border Services and the Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada.
“It is important that such information is collected and protected as soon as possible to ensure that it is not lost over time and that critical evidence for future prosecution is retained,” the statement said.
A website has been set up to provide Ukrainians with research information, and leaflets are also being given to those arriving at Canadian airports this week and by groups working with newcomers.
The War Crimes Program focuses on denying safe haven to individuals believed to have committed or been complicit in war crimes, crimes against humanity or genocide, and holding them accountable for their behavior.
In late March, it was announced that the RCMP would send officers to work with the International Criminal Court to help investigate allegations that war crimes and crimes against humanity are taking place in Ukraine.
