Photo: Donna Numminen Wood Lake Algal Bloom in 2021. New research shows Canada’s lakes are in warmer water due to climate change. A survey of 143 different studies showed that lakes everywhere are getting warmer, shallower and more subject to toxic algal blooms. Researchers say cold-water fish such as lake trout are being pushed aside by others such as smallmouth bass. They found that lakes in northern latitudes, such as Canada’s, experience the most rapid changes. And they say these changes are driven by more ice-free days and greater evaporation.
