The 60-year-old comedian took to Twitter on Friday to share the news of Will, 53,’s punishment, noting that he is likely to “do six years with good behavior”.
Will, who was not forced to return for the Academy Award for Best Actor, received the ban after being slapped by Chris Rock on stage at last month’s ceremony after making a joke about his wife, Jade Pinkett Smith.
Opinions: On Friday, Ricky Gervais reacted to the Academy’s decision to ban Will Smith from future Oscars for the next 10 years
Sharing an article announcing Will’s ban, Ricky wrote: “I hope he only does 6 years with good manners.”
The actor was a prominent voice among celebrities in the aftermath of the Smith-Rock incident.
He has also hit people who have called Jada Pinkett Smith alopecia a “disability” as he stood on Will Smith’s divisive slap in the face for the Oscars.
The comedian reposted the news on Twitter and wrote: “I hope he will only do 6 years with good behavior”
Ricky said Chris Rock’s joke about Jada’s alopecia was “not bad” and described it as the “quietest joke” he would say as he spoke during a live Q&A session on Twitter.
He has strongly criticized Will, 53, for invading the stage during the 94th Academy Awards and slapping Chris after the stand-up comedian made a joke about his wife shaving her head, comparing her to “GI Jane”.
Responding to people who hit Chris for making the joke, Ricky ridiculed social media users who referred to alopecia, a condition of hair loss, as a “disability.”

“Someone said he was joking with her [Jada’s] disability. Well, I’m going to lose weight a little bit, so I’m disabled. “That means I can park right next to Tescos now,” he said ironically.
Laughing, he added: “And I’m fat, this is a disease. “I’m fat and bald, I should have privileges.”
The Office star went on to insist that Chris’s comment “was not bad” as he condemned Will for slapping the Oscar presenter for making a joke.
He said: “You do not hit people for a joke, no matter how bad it is. And it was not bad!
“It was like the calmest joke I would ever say.”
Will has been excluded from the Oscars for 10 years for slapping Chris, but will be allowed to retain the Best Actor award.
ENTIRE STATEMENT OF THE ACADEMY
The 94th Oscars were going to be a celebration for the many people in our community who did an incredible job last year. However, these moments were overshadowed by the unacceptable and harmful behavior that we saw Mr. Smith exhibit on stage.
During our TV show, we did not adequately address the situation in the room. For that, we are sorry. This was an opportunity for us to set an example for our guests, the spectators and the family of our Academy around the world, and we were left – unprepared for the unprecedented.
Today, the Board of Governors convened a meeting to discuss how to better respond to Will Smith’s actions at the Oscars, in addition to accepting his resignation. The Board has decided that for a period of 10 years from April 8, 2022, Mr. Smith will not be allowed to attend Academy events or programs, in person or in person, including, for example, the Oscars.
We want to express our deep gratitude to Mr. Rock for keeping his composure under exceptional circumstances. We also want to thank the hosts, the nominees, the presenters and the winners for their sensitivity and grace during our TV show.
This action we are taking today in response to Will Smith’s conduct is a step towards a broader goal of protecting the safety of our artists and guests and restoring confidence in the Academy. We also hope that a period of healing and rehabilitation can begin for all involved and affected.
In a statement, the Academy denounced Smiths’s “unacceptable” and “harmful” behavior that “overshadowed” the whole night.

In a statement issued Friday afternoon after the decision was made, Smith told Deadline: “I accept and respect the Academy’s decision.”
He had already resigned from the Academy last Friday, taking the decision to cancel his membership, as was the case with Harvey Weinstein. Smith’s wife, Jada, will still be allowed to attend face-to-face events.
The 54-member board of directors met on Friday morning after heated discussions among its 9,000 members who have been raging for the past 12 days in hundreds of WhatsApp groups.
The slap split Hollywood and the public, with some insisting he should be stripped of his Oscar and not rewarded for the violence, while others said they rejected it and ridiculed it on social media.
Will slapped Chris on stage after the comedian made a joke about the shaved head of his wife Jada Pinkett-Smith. Pinkett-Smith has been open in the past about her fights with alopecia.
After the slap, Smith returned to his seat and screamed “hold my wife’s name out of your mouth.”
He then won the Academy Award for Best Actor in a Leading Role for his role as Richard Williams in King Richard. He used his speech to apologize to the Academy and Rock and later posted an apology on Instagram.
Chris has remained silent on the matter, speaking only to say that he was “working out” what happened.
