The Independent reports that Akshata Murthy, who is believed to be worth hundreds of billions of pounds, was a non-dom. This means that her permanent residence is outside the UK and, although she is still liable to UK income tax in that country, she does not have to pay UK income tax abroad if she enters in the UK. Non-resident status is legal and it is understood that Ms Murthy pays taxes abroad for her income abroad.
