Russia has accused the West of trying to derail peace talks with Ukraine by fueling “hysteria” over allegations of war crimes by Moscow forces following their withdrawal from the Kiev region.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said on Tuesday that Moscow believed the war crimes allegations were intended to derail the negotiation process. Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlüt Çavuşoλουlu said on Wednesday that the killing of civilians in Ukraine had made peace talks between Moscow and Kiev more difficult, but expected more talks, possibly eventually between foreign ministers. Speaking to NATO ahead of a meeting with his counterparts, Tsavousoglu also said the alliance was aware of Ukraine’s demands for more weapons and that the allies were trying to step up aid. Russia sent tens of thousands of troops to Ukraine on February 24 in a special operation to downgrade its southern neighbor’s military capabilities and kill people it called dangerous nationalists.
