A criminal complaint filed on Tuesday revealed that the suspect, Natalia Alexandrovna Hitchcock, had become increasingly paranoid and began behaving out of character after the start of the war in Ukraine. The Sheboygan Falls resident has Russian roots and her parents still live in Russia. Oliver Hitchcock, the eight-year-old boy, died at the hospital on Friday from injuries sustained on Wednesday when his mother allegedly drowned him unconscious.

Oliver’s older brother was also attacked last weekend. Natalia said she kept him underwater in the family bathtub, but only to scare him. According to the complaint, she said that it would be difficult for her to kill the older boy because of his size. The story goes on under the ad During Wednesday’s incident, Natalia also stabbed herself in the chest. She told police she tried to “cut her heart”, according to WTMJ Milwaukee. After Oliver fainted from strangulation, the older brother woke up his father, who was also in the apartment at the time of the attack, saying his brother was dead. According to court records, Oliver’s father underwent cardiopulmonary resuscitation before the first correspondents arrived and rushed him to the hospital. The names of Oliver’s father and older brother have not been released, but the complaint states that Natalia and the children’s father have been married for 15 years.

Natalia’s husband told investigators that the war in Ukraine had affected his wife’s mental health, but said she had not been previously diagnosed with a mental illness. The complaint states that the father “added that in the last few days (Natalia) Hitchcock also wanted to buy survival equipment, such as a camping stove and fuel, and also wanted to buy knives and weapons.” The complaint revealed that her husband “felt the war between Russia and Ukraine strengthened (Natalia) Hitchcock more than ever and that he started drinking alcohol”. When police spoke to Natalia about the attack, she told them that “someone was checking her mind and she had been poisoned”. According to the complaint, Natalia was overwhelmed by delusions that day and had hallucinations, “she began to think that the Russian government was going to take her children and abuse them.” “He thought it was better to take the life of Victim 1 (Oliver) because he was the youngest and most vulnerable. He said he believed that Victim 1 (Oliver) could not defend himself if he had been mistreated and thought it would be better to kill him than to see him abused. Natalia is being held in the county jail on $ 1 million bail. Eric Hitchcock, brother of Natalia’s husband and Oliver’s uncle, started a GoFundMe page to support his brother and nephew. In the post, he explains that donations from the fundraiser with the help of the family “begin to face a life that has been overthrown by an irrational act of violence.” Eric also noted on the page that Natalia has never been aggressive or abusive in the past. “We have no choice but to ask why and how this could happen.” The WTMJ reports that as Natalia left the court on Tuesday, she apologized to her husband. “I’m very sorry.
