Photo: The Canadian Press Mandatory random testing for COVID-19 continues today for travelers entering from Canada’s four major airports in Toronto, Vancouver, Calgary and Montreal. But the actual tests will be completed outside of airports, either in person or through a virtual swab test appointment. Ottawa halted random testing of vaccinated travelers entering Canada by air last month as it worked to move the actual testing process to non-airport locations. At the time, the federal government faced growing criticism from tourism and air travel industry groups who believed public health restrictions were responsible for the chaos at Canada’s airports. The situation at Canada’s airports has remained chaotic since testing was put on hold. The Deputy Director of Public Health, Dr. Howard Djou, has previously said that mandatory random testing is an important part of Canada’s strategy to detect new variants coming into the country.
