Former United States Secretary of State for Europe and Russia’s Chief Executive Officer Fiona Hill said many of the officials under former President Trump’s administration were “obsessed” with power, such as Gollum, the “Lord of the Rings.” Ring “was obsessed with the ring.
“I used to have this run in our NSC office. As a kid, I was a big fan of Tolkien and the Lord of the Rings. So in the Trump administration, we would talk about the ring and the fear of becoming Gollum,” he said. Hill in The New York Times Magazine.
Gollum, a franchise character also known as Smeagol, owned and then lost what was known as the “Ring of Power”, which slowly eroded those who owned it. Gollum often called the ring “my precious.”
Hill told the Times that she had witnessed “several people” in the administration who were “obsessed with ‘my precious’, their enthusiasm and their power to be in the White House”.
More specifically, he pointed out “those who will not testify at the hearing of his referral”.
Hill also spoke at length about the ousted president’s struggle to stay in power in The New York Times Magazine.
He said Trump’s incitement to the January 6 uprising was an attempt to become like the Russian Vladimir Putin – who changed Russia’s constitution so that he could stay in power.
“I remembered how, in 2020, Putin had changed the Russian Constitution to allow him to stay in power longer,” he said. “This was Trump pulling a Putin.”
