Police said the surveillance video showed two people gesturing to each other across the street before a man pulled out a gun and started firing. The incident, which occurred near 156th Street and St. Ann’s, occurred shortly before 14:00 on Friday afternoon. Police have not been able to identify the man who shot him, but are examining video surveillance and waiting for ballistics to be released, said Bronx Borough Detectives Deputy Chief of Staff Timothy McCormack. “At this point, early in our investigation, it appears that the brazen criminals opened fire during an altercation,” said NYPD Commissioner Keechant Sewell. “What I can say for sure is that New York detectives will work tirelessly to bring those responsible to justice.” In a tweet, Mayor Eric Adams called the latest tragedy “unacceptable” due to gun violence. “We lost a 16-year-old baby in the Bronx today. We pray for this young girl, her family and the other two victims in the hospital,” Adams said. “It is a tragedy. It is unacceptable. That is why we can not leave our streets in armed violence.” CNN’s Claire Colbert contributed to this report.
