WESLACO, Texas – Texas Gov. Greg Abbott announced new directives as part of the state’s border security efforts Wednesday afternoon. Abbott instructed the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) to introduce a zero-tolerance policy for “unsafe” vehicles that may also smuggle immigrants. To enforce this, DPS will conduct enhanced security checks on these vehicles as they cross the Texas border from 4pm on Wednesday. Abbott also instructed the Texas Department of Emergency Management (TDEM) to charter buses to send migrants to the Capitol in Washington, in response to the Biden administration, which is said to be transporting migrants to Texas border towns. The Texas National Guard has also been instructed to enforce embargoes to deal with any mass immigration. Boat blockades will be developed on the Rio Grande River in partnership with Texas Parks and Wildlife, and wire and container blockades will be developed at low-water crossing points along the border. The guard is expected to rehearse mass immigration as early as Thursday, which will last until May in five locations. Those taking part in these rehearsals will be equipped with riot equipment in anticipation of the “caravan violence”. Texans along the border can expect to see increased military operations in the Rio Grande Valley on the Anzalduas Bridge at McAllen, the Eagle Pass, Del Rio, Laredo and Zapata. The borders will be illuminated at night in areas with high smuggling. Abbott says more instructions are expected next week. This comes after the CDC announced last week that it was ending a policy limiting asylum at the US-Mexico border to prevent the spread of COVID-19, also known as Title 42. The change will take effect by May 23. SEE THE PRESS CONFERENCE BELOW:
