The dual carriageway was closed in both directions between Riverside and Merway. The movement was supported by Queen Eleanor to Billings and beyond. The National Highway reported there were at least two miles of queues in both directions with a detour in effect after a one-car crash.

Emergency services were on the scene. Northamptonshire Police tweeted earlier: “Motorists are advised to avoid the A45 at Barnes Meadow in Northampton following a serious road traffic collision this afternoon. “The road is closed in both directions while emergency services are at the scene.” A police spokeswoman added: “Officers from the Serious Collision Investigation Unit remain at the scene. The A45 at Northampton is closed. “The queues have been cleared, however the westbound will remain closed while investigations are carried out.” UPDATE: National Highways tweeted shortly after 8pm: “The A45 is now open in both directions between the A43 and A5076 near #Northampton following an earlier serious collision. Delays clean well in the area. Thanks for your patience and have a nice trip.”
