The Sunday Times has published its comprehensive guide for some of the best spots to reside in the country. The expert judges assessed a wide range of factors, from schools, transport and broadband to culture, green spaces and the health of the high street. Beverley, which has featured on the list in the past, was nowhere to be spotted this time. Guide editor Tim Palmer explained that it was simply not mentioned as it has been ‘in so many times that they’ve said everything there is to say’. Here are 10 of our picks and why we think they deserve recognition.

  1. Swanland There are no swans in Swanland, but there are plenty of ducks and moor hens (Image: Katie Pugh) Swanland is widely considered the jewel in East Yorkshire’s crown – home to the biggest and most expensive houses, an outstanding school, and a picturesque pond. While there is a definite ‘sleepy’ feel with mainly retired people pottering around tending to the flower beds and litter-picking, there is also a seriously upmarket edge to Swanland. Houses on the exclusive Kemp Road sell for an average of £850,000, and the average house price in the village as a whole is just over half a million pounds. The village school is also rated outstanding.
  2. West Ella The chocolate box cottage is up for sale for almost £700,000 (Image: hull live) Famed for its mega-mansions, West Ella heads up the golden mile filled with homes belonging to the rich and successful. The west Hull village is home to lavish pads, including many mansions, with Bentleys in drive ways and sprawling green lawns. But it isn’t just these beautiful homes that make it such a desired place to live – despite having no pub, post office, corner shop or even a church – but its deep-lying history too.
  3. The Avenues in Hull The area named for the leafy streets that crisscross each other between Princes Avenue and Chanterlands Avenue is something of an attraction for residents from elsewhere. Chanterlands Avenue is usually a favourite among shoppers boasting a lively parade of independent stores, while Princes Avenue normally welcomes revellers eager to sample an array of bars and restaurants. 4. Humber Street in Hull Who knows what businesses might pop up next? The up and coming spot has shown nothing but promise for Hull’s thriving nights out, art, music and food scenes. The area makes for a scenic spot in the day to shop for clothes, plants, homeware and art in the day and a platform for top bars such as Taphouse, Hygge, Tribal, and Social at night. The area has seen a great deal of growth since City of Culture, with a whole host of new businesses starting up and down the street, as well as a sizeable investment in new homes. Humber Street also has a fantastic array of local shops such as Form, Plant & Paint, 19Point4, and the 101 Store. It even has its own gym and beauty salon. These enviable amenities along with the cool, modern feel of the place have made it one of the most sought-after spots in Hull.
  5. Walkington The duck pond in Walkington This idyllic village just outside of Beverley, was previously on the list last year, and we think it deserves to be put back on. The historic village, anchored around a quaint duck pond, offers many plus points for would-be residents. It is an attractive area with a jumble of red-brick and white-washed houses. Other than a large shop, there are also two good pubs, a primary school (rated ‘good’ by Ofsted) and a village hall buzzing with keep-fit classes and mother-and-toddler groups.
  6. Millington The stunning village of Millington in the East Riding of Yorkshire (Image: David Brown / Geograph) This pretty little settlement in the heart of rural East Yorkshire feels off the beaten track, yet is only about two miles from Pocklington and about 12 miles from Driffield, Capital of the Wolds. Situated off the B1246, Millington is barely more than a hamlet of quaint cottages and farmhouses, whose history is thought to date back to Roman times. But visitors to the area may never have ventured into the charming village of Millington itself, which is a shame when there is a lovely, traditional pub, a tearoom and an historic church for physical and spiritual nourishment.
  7. Hotham A walk through North Cave and Hotham Hotham is a gorgeous village with many quaint cottages, with more expensive homes speckled through the vast scenic greenery. With a walk through an avenue of trees, you can get a glimpse of the majestic hall which was built in the 18th century for William Burton.
  8. Burton Pidsea A walk round the Holderness village of Burton Pidsea In the centre of Holderness is the unassuming village of Burton Pidsea dotted with picturesque cottages which just seem to merge from the surrounding farm land. Weaving through the village lanes, you can admire the pretty homes as you walk along before heading on to bridleways which take you deep into the surrounding countryside.
  9. Holme-on-Spalding Moor A walk around Holme-on-Spalding-Moor There is one feature which dominates the village, towering above the residents is a hill on which stands the majestic medieval All Saints Church. Despite being a marsh for much of the 13th Century, the mind boggles as to why the little-known gem of a village is not talked about more often by ramblers who love taking to the hilly climbs to find that perfect view.
  10. Foston-on-the Wolds Idyllic mill pond on a walk through Foston-on-the-Wolds Foston-on-the Wolds is one of many idyllic villages dotted throughout the area between Driffield and Bridlington. With landscapes so memorable, they inspired renowned artist David Hockney during his time residing in Bridlington.
