I don’t tend to “ooh” at the best Android phones, because to my eyes they all look the same – with the exception of the Nothing (1) Phone, they all seem to be built from the same basic template. But I’m definitely lusting after Samsung’s best foldable phones, the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4 and Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4 – and the latest leaked images have me lusting just a little bit more. I put “leaked” in quotes because it’s obviously shots that press into my eye. and I think it’s pretty clear that someone at Samsung is very pleased with the attention these phones are getting ahead of their August 10th release. The idea that these images are leaking is something that Samsung is having fun with. But regardless, it’s still interesting to see the new images surfaced by serial hacker Evan Blass over at 91mobiles (opens in new tab), which provide tantalizing glimpses into the color options and basic design of the new foldable phones.

Color and shape
I have to state a bias here: I love flip phones. I’m an iPhone 13 user today, and while it’s the best phone for me, it doesn’t have that great tactile feel that my ancient Motorola Razr had in the pre-iPhone era: closing your phone is a great way to get angry – end a call. So the prospect of a foldable phone with today’s cutting edge technology is very exciting to me. The press shots don’t give away much about the new Samsung, but if you look at the ones for the Z Flip 4, you can see two main things: the new colors, which are dark gray, purple, gold and light blue, and what looks to be a significantly weaker case. This is great because while the existing Flip is pocket-friendly, it’s still quite thick when you close it. Even a small difference would put less strain on your pocket. The shots of the Galaxy Z Fold 4 are much less revealing, suggesting it’s probably as porky as Percy Pig. But if you squint, you can make out this year’s color options. which are black, a beige gold and a greyish green. I suspect the emphasis here will be on performance rather than looks, as the Flip seems to have the edge in that category. I know I won’t be buying any of these phones because my family is too invested in the Apple ecosystem. But as a true phone fan, I’m excited about these new models and hope Apple pays attention.
