Toronto police responded to a call in the Dundas and Keele area shortly after 5 a.m. Thursday for reports of an attack, according to a statement issued Friday.
Police said a 39-year-old man, who was later identified as TPS police officer Sameer Kara, was involved in an altercation with a woman.
During the controversy, investigators claim the woman was beaten. No one was taken to hospital.
Toronto police arrested Cara at the scene and charged him with assault. The charge has not been proven in court.
Cara was one of three Toronto police officers found not guilty of sexually assaulting a police officer at a hotel in 2015.
According to TPS, Kara, who served in the force for 13 years, was out of service at the time of Thursday’s incident.
He has been suspended and is scheduled to appear in court on May 19.
