Frenkie de Jong wants to stay at Barcelona, but if he has to leave then his preferred destination is not Manchester United, according to Sport, despite the huge prospect United’s hierarchy will make to sign his top target Erik ten Haag in this summer’s transfer window. Instead, it is reported that the Dutch 25-year-old would only consider a move to either Bayern Munich or United’s Premier League rivals Chelsea. That extended deal looks set to run until the transfer deadline on August 31. Meanwhile, Chelsea have moved a step closer to signing Sevilla defender Jules Conte. The Blues have agreed personal terms with the 23-year-old France international centre-back and have now met the Spanish club’s £55million asking price, according to several reports, with Kunde undergoing a medical in the next 48 hours. Thomas Tuchel is rebuilding his defense following the departures of Antonio Rudiger to Real Madrid and Andreas Christensen to Barcelona, leaving veterans Thiago Silva and Cesar Azpilicueta as Chelsea’s central midfielders. Kunde would add to the recent arrival of Kalidou Koulibaly at Stamford Bridge. Elsewhere, Real Madrid do not want to re-sign Cristiano Ronaldo, according to Marca. The Mail report that Leicester have rejected a £15m bid from Monaco for Boubakari Soumare. And Leicester are willing to consider big offers for James Maddison and Kelechi Iheanacho in order to raise funds to strengthen the squad, the Telegraph claims. Austria is one of the biggest underdogs left in the competition. Nobody expected them to make it out of the group stage, but a confident display against England in the opening match showed they may have been underestimated. Georgia Stanway combines teamwork and timing to deliver England’s most spectacular moment
It was the kind of goal that Georgia Stanway, growing up in the footballing outpost of Barrow-in-Furness, playing in the back garden with her brothers, would always imagine herself scoring. The kind of emphatic, long-range strike befitting such a stage, deserved to seal England’s place in the semi-finals of another major international tournament. But in the white heat of the extra-time win over Spain in Brighton, when that dream had come true, it was a moment he barely remembers. “Everything seems like a huge blur at the moment,” the Bayern Munich-bound midfielder said after the final whistle. “I have to watch it and see where I was, how it went to the net, I literally can’t remember. I remember saying to one of the girls, ‘When did we actually score?’” This is one of the great ironies of such moments in elite sport. While a goal as spectacular and as important as Stanway’s will live long in the memory of many who witnessed it, whether it was one of the 28,994 inside the Amex or the millions watching at home, it will only be a fuzzy, blurry mess of sweat . , strains and lactic acid in the mind of the woman who noted it. You wait your whole life to score a goal like that and then struggle to remember how you did what you did or even why you did it. Mark Critchley looks at England’s Euro 2022 quarter-final winner:

Here’s the latest from The Independent on summer transfer news and deals being done: Bruno Fernandes says he does not know what Cristiano Ronaldo has in mind in terms of a transfer this summer and that he should be given space to overcome personal issues that kept him away from Manchester United’s pre-season tour. Aaron Ramsey has been left out of Juventus’ pre-season tour amid rumors he is set to leave Turin for good, though his £400,000-a-week contract is once again proving problematic in terms of finding a club. And Mikel Arteta has revealed the biggest reasons behind Arsenal’s move for Oleksandr Zinchenko, who is soon set to seal a £32million move from Man City. Karl Matchett 21 July 2022 18:00 1658421639

Nicolas Pepe is one of the names likely to leave Arsenal this summer, either on loan or permanently, with HITC via football.london suggesting Newcastle United could be his destination. The Magpies are keen to sign a winger this summer, it seems, given their link with Jack Harrison as well. Meanwhile, Athletic say Arsenal are still interested in Youri Tielemans and Leicester are “open to selling” if they receive a “suitable offer” for the Belgian centre-midfielder. The Guardian reports that if Chelsea go ahead and complete a deal for Jules Conte, who is also wanted by Barcelona, the Catalan club will turn their attention to Arsenal’s William Saliba. The French defender is expected to finally get a chance this season from the Gunners, but he won’t necessarily be first choice, which could make a move to the Camp Nou possible. Marcos Alonso and Cesar Azpilicueta are still on Barca’s mind. Karl Matchett 21 July 2022 17:20 1658419239

Portuguese journalist Pedro Sepulveda spoke about Cristiano Ronaldo on Sky Sports News today and still firmly believes he is open to a move away from Old Trafford this summer. “I can’t see Ronaldo from Manchester United next season. The two main teams one step closer than the others are Chelsea and Atletico Madrid,” he said. “I can see him playing for those two teams – Chelsea have a new owner, a new project, with money to spend on transfers. “Also Madrid is Ronaldo’s second home, he has a house there, his wife is from there. It’s a great option for him – but first of all, they would have to find the money. The transfer fee would be around €15-20m, but his salary would be too high for them. “We’ve already seen Bayern Munich make a bid for Joao Felix, which was rejected, but with the possibility of Ronaldo, I think Atletico will have to decide what they want for their future.” Still a long way to go for that. Two potential deals for Fulham are close to being resolved, but neither has yet arrived. Kevin Babu is all but signed and sealed, with Wolfsburg agreeing a €5.5m transfer. The 27-year-old has already agreed personal terms, but a medical is required, says Fabrizio Romano. Bird Leno, on the other hand, is still a long way from done, with no deal yet between Fulham and Arsenal – but the goalkeeper is happy with the move he will make, reports Florian Plettenberg. The Gunners will need to lower their asking price for the deal to happen. Karl Matchett 21 July 2022 16:15 1658415623
