During a telephone conversation, Trinto asked Lopez Obrador to join the “Stand Up for Ukraine” campaign on Saturday to raise funds for Ukrainian refugees and internally displaced persons, the Canadian government said.
Trinto convenes the event with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.
Lopez Obrador tried to remain neutral in the conflict and refused to impose sanctions on Russia. While his government supported a United Nations vote calling on Russia to withdraw its forces from Ukraine, it also criticized Europe for sending weapons to other countries – as it did for Ukraine.
Last month, the US ambassador to Mexico expressed concern about a public demonstration of solidarity between the Russian ambassador to Mexico and a group of Mexican lawmakers at the opening of a Mexico-Russia friendship committee.
Ukraine’s ambassador to Mexico, Oksana Dramaretska, posted pictures of corpses on the streets of Ukraine on Sunday and wrote on Twitter to Lopez Obrador: “Do you really want to continue friendly relations with those in the Kremlin who are committing genocide after that?”
Lopez Obrador has not commented publicly on the tweet.
Dramaretska tweeted after the bodies of civilians were found shot at close range in the Ukrainian city of Bukha.
Ukraine has called the killings Russian war crimes. Russia has denied the allegations in a statement issued Friday stating “Similar, baseless allegations concerning Russia have been made more than once.
The Canadian government said Lopez Obrador and Trinto also discussed their concerns about the humanitarian impact of the conflict and the global challenges posed by it, including those related to energy and food security.
