The men, aged 18 and 20, suffered serious facial injuries that are not said to be life-threatening. The scene was cordoned off while police were conducting investigations.
The road reopened on Friday morning. Police are conducting trawls via CCTV to locate the gunmen and are appealing to anyone with information to contact them immediately.

A West Midlands police spokesman said: “We are investigating after two men were shot in a car on Icknield Port Road this morning (April 8.) The couple, aged 18 and 20, were at a petrol station near the Gillott Street intersection when shots were heard around 12.30 p.m.
“They are in the hospital with serious injuries to their faces, although they are not thought to be life-threatening. We are investigating CCTV as we try to determine who is involved.
“We know there were people in the area at the time and we would ask them to contact us for information. This can be done via Live Chat on our website or by calling 101 and citing log 61 of 8/4/22.”
West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesman: “We were called at 00.36 to report an incident on Icknield Port Road in Birmingham. Before our arrival, we were evacuated as we no longer needed our help.”
