Two people are dead after two separate crashes in downtown Newfoundland Friday morning. A 24-year-old woman is dead and another person was taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries after a vehicle collided with moose on the Trans Canada in central Newfoundland overnight. Police were called to the scene when a small car with five occupants collided with a moose on the Trans Canada east of South Brook around 1:00am. The vehicle left the road and went down a steep embankment. The young woman, who was in the car, died at the scene.
The driver was rushed to hospital with life-threatening injuries, while the three other passengers in the back seat suffered minor injuries. Meanwhile, a 49-year-old man died when the fuel truck he was driving left the road and mounted just east of the Bay d’Espoir turnoff at around 4:00am. The victim, who was the driver and sole occupant of the truck, died at the scene. The collision caused significant spillage on the highway and cleanup is now underway, reducing the highway to one lane.
