Mr Martin commented on the 24th anniversary of the signing of the Good Friday Agreement in Northern Ireland. He said the deal was a “seismic landmark” that needed to be protected. “We are united on the island of Ireland in our aversion to Russian aggression and in our support and solidarity with the people of Ukraine,” Martin said. “It is the duty of all of us to protect and nurture the Good Friday Agreement that marked a seismic milestone during the life of this island. “It marked a new beginning based on peace and mutual respect – based on the principles of consensus, democratic institutions, reconciliation and cooperation.” Mr Martin said the agreement was the product of many people’s work and that it was important to “recognize the progress that has been made since then”. However, he added that there is still “unfinished work” to resolve issues and difficulties from the problems. He said the Irish Government was “fully and deeply committed to working with the British Government and all parties and communities in Northern Ireland to promote peace and reconciliation and to support the full and effective functioning of all the institutions of the Grand Friday “.
