CTV National News London correspondent Daniele Hamamdjian arrived at the scene of the plane crash Thursday in Chernihiv, a city of 280,000 northeast of the Ukrainian capital, Kyiv, less than 100 kilometers from the country’s border with Russia and Russia.
On March 5, the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine shared a video with the aircraft falling vertically to the ground after the forces shot it down.
The Associated Press later confirmed the authenticity of the video, in which viewers cheered as they watched the plane fall from the sky.
“It completely destroyed this area,” Hamamjian said as he stood in a residential neighborhood, with pieces of the jet visible in the wreckage.
“We understand that there was a woman and her daughter hidden in the basement here, they managed to survive. A man lived next door. Unfortunately, he did not.”
Two-thirds of the city’s population fled during the height of the Chernihiv conflict, which was cut off from the rest of the country, leaving people without food, water and electricity for weeks.
A woman told CTV National News that the electricity in her apartment building had just been restored two days before.
However, he is still afraid to turn on the lights at night for fear of being targeted.
“There is nothing more outrageous for the people who have been affected, not just their lives but their lives have been turned upside down,” Hamamjian said.
“To hear that all this is fake, that it is somehow directed and they want people to see what life has been like here for the last seven weeks now.”
Chernihiv was the last and largest city to be liberated by Ukrainian forces.
Russian troops have withdrawn from much of the north of the country, including Kiev, for what observers believe will be a new offensive in the eastern Donbass region, where separatist forces aligned with Moscow have been fighting Ukraine since 2014. the same year that Russia annexed Crimea.
