In a new statement, through the Washington Post, the actor commented: “I accept and respect the decision of the Academy.” Earlier today (April 8), the Academy revealed the dramatic consequences for the actor, who slapped Chris Rock on stage at the Oscars in Los Angeles on March 27. The Academy’s board met to decide on Smith’s fate, in a meeting that was quickly attended. In an open letter released after the meeting, Academy President David Rubin and CEO Dawn Hudson wrote that this year’s Oscars were “overshadowed by the unacceptable and harmful behavior we saw Mr. Smith exhibit on stage.” They continued: “This action we are taking today in response to Will Smith’s conduct is a step towards a broader goal of protecting the safety of our performers and guests and restoring confidence in the Academy. “We also hope that a period of treatment and rehabilitation can begin for all those involved and affected.” Smith resigned from the Academy on April 1, five days after the incident. In his resignation letter, Smith commented: “I have responded promptly to the Academy’s disciplinary hearing and will fully accept any consequences for my conduct. “My actions at the 94th Academy Awards were shocking, painful and unforgivable.” He continued: “I betrayed the trust of the Academy. I deprived other candidates and winners of the opportunity to celebrate and be honored for their outstanding work. I’m cracked. “
