Police say the sexual assaults allegedly took place between 2004 and 2011 while the students were teenagers playing football at Churchill High School and Vincent Massey Collegiate.

The students, now adults, all reported being sexually assaulted by a man who initially taught physical education and coached football in Churchill before becoming a fitness instructor and soccer coach at Vincent Massey. Investigators say the coach had a relationship with the students and say most of the alleged attacks took place at the suspect’s home. The investigation found that some of the alleged attacks took place over months and years. McKinnon said historical investigations pose a challenge for investigators because events can sometimes occur a decade before a complainant appears. He has been charged with five counts of sexual assault, four counts of sexual exploitation, one count of sexual assault and four counts of seduction. Police say McKay was released on Crown Consent.

McKinnon said McKay was still working as a teacher at the Pembina Trails School Division at the time of his arrest. The Winnipeg Police Department for Sexual Offenses continues to investigate, and McKinnon said police have not ruled out more casualties. “There is always the possibility of other people because the football community is very widespread and the person we are talking about here has had a very long tenure in the football community,” he said.
