In May, the body of a man searching for a frisbee in a lake in Largo, Florida was found after a suspected alligator attack. In June, another man was killed after being dragged into a lake by an alligator in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. But experts stressed that despite the number of alligators in the state, fatal attacks are rare in Florida. The FWC says there are an average of eight unprovoked alligator attacks a year that require medical attention. From 1948 to 2021, there were 442 unprovoked alligator bite incidents in the state, 26 of which resulted in death. The FWC says alligators are most active when temperatures rise and advises people not to swim in rivers and lakes at dawn and dusk. The US, like many parts of Europe, has imposed heat warnings on more than 40 million people, as parts of Texas, Oklahoma and Kansas could see their hottest temperatures this year, with a predicted high of 42 degrees.
