Senior officers in Leeds County have authorized the use of Section 60 of the 1994 Criminal Justice and Public Order Act to detect and prevent the transfer of offensive weapons to the area and to prevent serious violence. It gives police the power to search people or vehicles for assault weapons or dangerous devices without having to have the usual reasons to suspect that anyone is being searched. The order covers the area bordering York Road, Harehills Lane, Claypit Lane, A58, A61 and Woodhouse Lane. The authorization came into force at 2 p.m. for an initial 24 hours and its continuation will be subject to regular reviews. Leeds County Superintendent Ras Hughes said: “Violence such as stabbing can not and will not be tolerated and we will continue to do everything we can to identify those responsible and take positive action against them. “While detectives from the Leeds District CID are still working to establish the full extent of the incident, we believe it may be linked to rival groups involved in street-level drug supply. “We will take a number of measures to prevent further incidents, including the use of additional search powers under Section 60. This gives officers an increased ability to target those involved in armaments so that we can prevent further offenses. “Officers from the local neighborhood policing team will also increase their patrols and presence in the area to prevent further incidents and reassure the community. “I want to reassure people that we remain very firmly committed to working proactively to keep our communities safe and I hope they will support the approach we are taking. “Control and accountability are key factors in ensuring the trust and confidence of our communities and we work closely with local representatives to keep them fully informed.” Anyone who witnessed any part of the incident or who has any information that could assist in the investigation is kindly requested to contact the Leeds County CID at 101 by quoting crime report 13220186128 or online via www.westyorkshire.police. uk / 101livechat Information can also be given anonymously to the independent charity Crimestoppers at 0800 555 111.
