Having set up a wide-ranging package of sanctions on Russia with its allies, the United States has urged China, a close ally of Russia, not to provide substantial assistance to Russia or to take steps to reduce sanctions. He also tried to urge countries that have not imposed sanctions on the Russian economy, especially India, to take a tougher line on Moscow.
